Pig iron is the name of an alloy of iron and carbon (2.14-6.67%), which is a raw material for making various items and smelting steel and has excellent foundry properties. The properties of this material depend not only on carbon, but also on other impurities: sulfur, phosphorus, manganese and silicon. Although carbon is the main component that affects the production of one or another grade of pig iron:

Ductile. Its method of production: prolonged heating (annealing) of white iron castings. The labeling is the same as that of the high-strength grade. The name of the grade indicates its ductility, because products made of such cast iron are cast.
White. This is a variety that has increased hardness and strength. It is poorly amenable to cutting and very fragile. It is used for making malleable iron or steel.
Gray. Iron-based alloy with partial or full inclusion of structurally free graphite. Depending on this, it may be pearlitic, ferrite-perlitic and ferrite.
High-strength. This grade includes spheroidal graphite and is a promising material for the production of critical parts which makes it possible to reduce the thickness and weight of cast structures while increasing their reliability. Due to its high flow properties, it can be used for the production of complex shaped parts amenable to all types of hardening heat treatments used for steel.
The fields of application of cast iron are quite varied. For example, gray grades are used for making various columns, base and foundation slabs, and sewer parts. High-strength and ductile grades are used as foundations for heavy equipment, supports for railroad and automobile bridges, etc.
